Functions of Sentences

Sentences may be put under three main headings:

Statements ,
which give some facts, news, information, etc., e.g.


There are two boys in the class.

The cow was killed by a tiger.

Questions, e.g.

How old are you?

Where does he live?

Desires,
these include, wishes, requests, commands, etc., e.g.


May you be happy.

Lend me some money.
Stand up.

Exclamations,
which say something suddenly and loudly, from fear, surprise, pain, anger, etc., e.g.


How stupid!

What a pity!
