When
it comes to business, hiding the truth is a liability and definitely can cause
a significant downfall to a great organization. Manpower is a part of business
that need to be taken into consideration in many factors for example the acquired
and required skills, the level of education and not to forget the competency in
language especially English language. English is a universal language of
businesses and industries, therefore technical students must master English
especially before they completed their study to prepare themselves to adapt to
the demand and strategy of industrial players out there.
Lately
(and since before), the industries are complaining on students’ lack in
communication and mastery in English as the industrial or business tool.
Statements like ‘they can’t communicate in English’, ‘their English is weak’,
‘poor communication skills’ are some examples of what the industrial players
are unveiling to us time to time.
Students
today are only up to their own leisure needs and not to the industrial or
business demand. They (the students) can understand English by writing,
listening and reading but they are not practicing the target language for their
own good in term of speaking. Time is wasted on social websites posting status,
uploading pictures but not on the effort to practice on communication skills
and at the same time preparing themselves for the future.
And
at the learning institution’s side, we are aware of this problem and since
before a lot of communication nurturing and strengthening effort has been carefully
planned and implemented especially in drilling the students using (by spoken)
English in almost every classes that they are in. Lots of presentations in
English are just part of the program and planning that is hoped to improve
students’ skills in the business medium of communication that is again, English
language.
Yet
still, it is up to the students to make use and especially practice on what
they have been taught in class even after they have completed their course.
Therefore, when they got something to show I mean in term English competency,
they will have nothing to hide no more and that is definitely something a
language teacher like me would be proud of.
